PETANQUE CONTRIBUTES TO UPM'S SINGLE GOLD

Seri Iskandar, 13 September – The 13th Statutory Body Sports Carnival (SUKANUN) held at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Perak Branch, Seri Iskandar Campus has closed its curtain in full glory, leaving sweet memories for the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) contingent when the women's Petanque event successfully contributed to the university's sole gold.

This biennial sports carnival brought together 58 government agencies with the participation of 3,702 athletes and 616 officers who competed in 17 sports events over four days, starting from 9 to 13 September 2025. The presence of supporters who flooded the tournament venue also added to the excitement, thus inspiring the participants to perform great and perform with full energy.

UPM, which sent participants in five events, namely Women's Volleyball, Men's & Women's Team Petanque, Men's Futsal, Mixed Team Darts and Men's Tenpin Bowling, gave fierce competition to other agencies.

For the Petanque event, the men's category saw 15 teams competing from various statutory agencies while 9 teams competed in the women's category. For the Petanque event, the UPM team was also lined up by the Bursar's Office staff - Mr. Mohamad Halim bin Mohamad Wahab, Mr. Mohd Asri bin Abdullah and Ms. Khairunnisa binti Zakaria. They managed to put on an excellent performance until the final battle.

The UPM Women's Team managed to defeat the host UiTM, in addition to overcoming fierce challenges from the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) to win the first gold for the contingent. This success made sweet history when it became the only gold medal brought home. Meanwhile, the men's team had to accept after their struggle ended in the quarter-finals after being shown the way out by the UiTM team on the third day of the tournament.

Overall, for this 13th edition, DBKL emerged as the overall champion with 112 points, closely followed by MBSA in second place with only a difference of 11 points. UPM finished the challenge in 17th position with 20 points. Although not in the top position, the success of the women's Petanque team is still the pride of UPM citizens and an injector of enthusiasm to face the upcoming edition of SUKANUN.

Congratulations to all the athletes who have performed with full dedication and displayed high sportsmanship throughout this tournament. Although the UPM contingent only brought home one gold medal, this achievement is still proud because it proves our ability to compete with other big agencies.
