SERDANG – 7 February 2020: The Occupational Safety and Health Committee of the Bursar's Office (JKKP-BURSAR) successfully organized an Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Briefing on 7 February 2020. The session, held at the OSH Hall, was delivered by Ms. Nor Afida binti Miskam from the Occupational Safety and Health Office, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). A total of 55 participants from various sections attended the session.

The objective of this briefing was to provide information and awareness to staff regarding occupational safety and health at the workplace. Participants were introduced to the concept of hazards, defined as any source or situation with the potential to cause harm in the form of injury or illness.

The briefing covered six (6) main types of workplace hazards:

1. Chemical Hazards – such as solvents, acids, alkalis, and gases.

2. Physical Hazards – including electricity, heat, noise, radiation, and dust.

3. Biological Hazards – like viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites, disease-carrying insects, and venomous animals.

4. Ergonomic Hazards – arising from unsuitable workspaces, manual handling, awkward postures, and repetitive tasks.

5. Psychosocial Hazards – including shift work, work-related stress, substance abuse, sexual harassment, and violence.

6. Environmental Hazards – involving climate and environmental stress factors.

In addition, the participants were briefed on methods to reduce and manage hazards, as well as the individual rights of employees concerning workplace safety.

It is hoped that through this session, the elements of occupational safety and health will be instilled among the Bursar’s Office staff, supported by strong commitment from management. Ultimately, every department should aim to create a safe and healthy work environment, which is crucial in delivering excellent services across the university.
